Many drivers already talk to Google's Gemini assistant through the car screen to get directions, play music or send a text. Starting this week, Gemini in the car can also look through your own Google accounts, including your email, calendar and photos, to answer questions about your life.
The feature is switched off until you turn it on. Before you do, it helps to know what Gemini will be able to see, who can use it, and what Google keeps afterward.
What happened
On October 20, 2026, Google announced that a feature it calls Personal Intelligence is coming to Gemini in cars. The announcement was posted on Google's official blog by Karan Daryanani, a senior product manager for Gemini. The rollout began that day on Android Auto, the app that runs on your phone and shows maps, music and messages on the car's dashboard screen.
Cars with Google built-in, where Google's software is installed in the car itself, are due to get it in the coming months, according to Google. Google did not give a firm date or a list of car models.
Gemini is not new to the car. TechCrunch reported that Gemini arrived in Android Auto in November 2025 and is now in millions of vehicles. TechCrunch also said Personal Intelligence itself rolled out across the U.S. in March 2026. This week's news brings that same personal layer to the dashboard.
According to Google, once you give permission, Gemini can pull information from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Google Search. Google's examples include asking for your flight's gate and whether the flight is on time in a single question, asking Gemini to navigate to "my doctor's appointment" without looking up the address, and finding an indoor restaurant along your route that suits your preferences, such as vegetarian options. Android Central also described Gemini searching your photos to answer a question about your car's tires.

KRUDO's Fine Print
Google's own pages answer most of the practical questions. Here is what they state.
- It is opt-in. Google's announcement says your apps are not connected until you choose to turn the feature on. Without it, navigation, music, calls and general questions still work. The answers are just not tailored to you.
- It may already be on. If you turned on Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on your phone, Google says the setting carries over into the car.
- You pick the apps. On an Android phone, Google's help page says to open the Gemini app, tap Menu, tap your profile picture, then Personal Intelligence, then Connected apps. Each app has its own on and off switch. Google's blog says you can turn the whole feature off at any time in Gemini settings.
- Not everyone qualifies. Google says it is for people 18 and older with a personal Google account. Work, school and supervised accounts are excluded. It is not offered in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or Nigeria.
- It needs your history to be saved. Google's help page lists "Keep activity" as a requirement. That is the setting that stores your Gemini conversations in your Google account. Some apps also need their own history settings switched on, such as Web & App Activity for Search and YouTube History for YouTube.
- Built-in cars need your phone. For cars with Google built-in, Google says personal answers are only shared when you are in the car with your phone connected.
- Disconnecting does not erase. Google's help page says that unplugging an app from Gemini does not delete anything already saved in your Gemini Apps Activity. You delete that separately.
On data handling, Google's help page says Gemini does not train its generative AI models directly on your Gmail inbox, Drive, Contacts, Calendar or other Workspace apps. The same page says Google does train on summaries, excerpts and inferences drawn from that information, along with your prompts and Gemini's responses. It also says that when Keep activity is on, your Gemini activity, including data from connected apps, is used to improve Google's services for everyone, including by training generative AI models. According to the page, a subset of connected-app data is reviewed by human reviewers, including trained service providers, who assess whether Gemini's answers were low-quality, inaccurate or harmful and suggest better ones. Google's help page asks users not to connect apps holding personal or confidential information that they would not want used to train its AI or seen by a reviewer.
By default, Google auto-deletes Gemini activity older than 18 months. You can change that to 3 months or 36 months, or choose never. If you turn Keep activity off, Google says your conversations are still saved with your account for up to 72 hours so it can provide the service and process any feedback, and they do not appear in your Gemini Apps Activity. Because Google lists Keep activity as a requirement, turning it off also rules out Personal Intelligence.
The reports differ on some details. Lowyat.NET in Malaysia gave the Android Auto start date as October 21. Malaysia is a day ahead of U.S. Pacific time for most hours, which likely explains the difference. Outlets also listed slightly different apps. TechCrunch named Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, Maps and Search but not Photos, while Android Central named Gmail, Photos, Maps, Search and Workspace apps but not YouTube. Google's own post names Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search. Google's general help page lists more apps that can be connected to Gemini, such as Drive, Keep and Wallet, but the car announcement does not say each of those works on the road.
TechCrunch and Droid Life both noted that some people may have privacy concerns about the feature. As of October 25, 2026, we found no public comment from an independent privacy group or regulator on the car version.
How this kind of thing happens
An AI assistant only knows what it is given. On its own, Gemini answers from general knowledge. When you connect your accounts, it is allowed to search your email, calendar or photo library at the moment you ask a question, find the relevant piece, such as a flight confirmation, and fold it into a spoken answer. Your question and Gemini's answer then become part of your Gemini activity. Google saves that activity to your account when Keep activity is on, and keeps conversations for up to 72 hours even when it is off.
What it means for you
Google presents the feature as hands-free help on the road: a driver can ask out loud for a gate number or an appointment address instead of looking it up on a screen.
The trade is that a voice question in the car can now draw on your inbox, your schedule and your photos. In a shared car, passengers could hear spoken answers built from your personal information. TechCrunch noted that the feature might make some consumers uncomfortable. If you already use Personal Intelligence on your phone, the decision may have been made for you, so it is worth checking.
What you can do
- Open the Gemini app on your phone and check whether Personal Intelligence is on. Google says a phone setting carries into the car.
- Go to Personal Intelligence, then Connected apps, and switch off any app you do not want Gemini to read, such as Gmail or Photos.
- Follow Google's own advice and do not connect apps that hold personal or confidential information you would not want used to train its AI or seen by a human reviewer.
- Review your Gemini Apps Activity and set auto-delete to 3 months if you want less history kept. Google lists this option on its help page. Leaving Keep activity on is required for Personal Intelligence.
- If you share a car, remember that spoken answers can include personal details. Consider leaving the feature off for shared trips.
- Remember that disconnecting an app does not delete past Gemini activity. Delete it separately in Gemini Apps Activity if you want it gone.
